17TH CENTURY

Best known as, “The Jacobean era” (1603-1625) a period in English and Scottish history that coincides with the reign of James VI of Scotland who inherited the crown of England as James I. The most important developments of the Jacobean Age was the creation of the King James Version of the Bible. It shaped this century values and beliefs but most importantly was used widely around Europe and the Americas to convert people to Christianity. With this advancement, it drew this society and writers into questioning the social order and developing texts of dark themes and tragedies. Mainly, influencing writers like William Shakespeare to write King Lear and Macbeth but most importantly the birth of women writers like Aphra Behnn; one of the most influential dramatists of the 17th century.

Also Known as, “ The Elizabethan era” due to Queen Elizabeth I reign (1558-1608) A period in time that witnessed many political and religious tensions between Catholics and the reformation of Protestants. Queen Elizabeth I was and still is considered one of the best rulers of English History. Her monarch has inspired many writers but mainly William Shakespeare who is known to be the greatest writer of this century and of all time. Ultimately, it was an age of exploration and expansion abroad to establish colonies under English rule across the globe, including in the New World, to further England’s empire.
